A Bengaluru-based startup is taking on one of the most strategically sensitive supply chain challenges facing India's electric vehicle industry: the overwhelming dependence on China for the rare earth magnets that power EV motors.
Vimag Labs is developing technology to produce rare earth magnets — the high-performance components at the heart of the permanent magnet motors used in most modern electric vehicles — within India. China currently controls the lion's share of global rare earth processing and magnet manufacturing, giving it enormous leverage over countries racing to electrify their transport sectors, including India.
The implications are significant. India has set ambitious targets for EV adoption, and a domestic EV industry that relies on a single foreign country for a critical component is inherently vulnerable to supply disruptions, export restrictions or price manipulation. Vimag Labs's pitch is to create an indigenous alternative that de-risks the supply chain for Indian automakers and EV manufacturers.
