Israel's Rafael Turns to India for Iron Dome Missiles: Sources

Israel's state-owned defence company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems has turned to India for supplies of missiles for the Iron Dome air defence system, NDTV reported Thursday, citing sources. The approach marks a significant moment in India-Israel defence relations and comes as Israel's military operations continue to place heavy demands on its missile stockpiles.

The Iron Dome is the cornerstone of Israel's layered air defence architecture, designed to intercept short-range rockets and artillery shells. With Israeli forces engaged in sustained operations, the demand for interceptor missiles has reportedly outpaced domestic production capacity, prompting Rafael to explore allied nations — including India — as potential suppliers or manufacturing partners.

For India, the request arrives at a strategically sensitive moment. New Delhi has been actively seeking to position itself as a credible defence exporter under its 'Make in India' initiative, and supplying components or finished missiles to one of the world's most sophisticated air defence systems would represent a significant validation of Indian defence manufacturing capabilities.

However, the move also carries diplomatic complexity. India maintains carefully calibrated relationships with Arab nations and Iran, and being seen as a direct arms supplier to Israel during active conflict could invite friction with those partners.
