- SBI Ecowrap advises India against making early trade concessions to the US
- Recommends testing Washington's resolve before any significant offer
- Comes amid ongoing India-US bilateral trade negotiations
- US has been pressing India on market access across multiple sectors
India should not rush to offer trade concessions to the United States and should instead probe the depth of Washington's resolve before making any significant moves, the State Bank of India's research arm SBI Ecowrap argued in its latest note. The advisory lands as India and the US continue to negotiate the terms of a bilateral trade arrangement amid a global environment of heightened tariff pressure.
SBI Ecowrap's position is that India occupies a stronger negotiating position than it may appear, and that making early concessions could undermine New Delhi's leverage in securing a deal that genuinely serves Indian interests. The note signals that at least within India's largest public sector bank's research division, there is appetite for a more assertive trade posture vis-à-vis Washington.
The US has been pressing India on a range of market access issues, including tariffs on agricultural goods, digital services, and pharmaceuticals. India, in turn, seeks greater access for its exports and more favourable terms for its IT and services sector. The negotiations have moved slowly, and the outcome will have far-reaching consequences for Indian exporters, farmers, and workers in export-oriented industries.
The advice to 'test Washington's resolve' reflects a broader strategic debate in New Delhi about how to handle an increasingly transactional US trade policy under the Trump administration. Whether the government heeds SBI Ecowrap's counsel or opts for a more accommodating approach will become clear as the next round of talks progresses.
