The government has rolled out incentive schemes and attracted high-profile announcements from domestic and global players keen to tap into India's ambitions to reduce dependence on foreign chips. Yet the path from policy announcement to working fabrication plant is treacherous. Building a semiconductor fab requires an extraordinarily precise ecosystem: ultra-pure chemicals, specialised equipment from a handful of global suppliers, cleanroom construction expertise, and a trained workforce that takes years to develop.
India currently lacks depth in several of these areas. Talent pipelines for chip design and fabrication engineering are still being built. The supply chains for critical materials and equipment largely remain overseas, and any disruption — geopolitical or logistical — can stall projects. Experts point out that countries like Taiwan and South Korea spent decades cultivating these capabilities, and India is attempting to compress that timeline significantly.
The stakes are high. Semiconductors are the foundation of the digital economy, powering everything from consumer electronics and electric vehicles to defence systems and AI hardware.
