India and Indonesia are preparing to sign a memorandum of understanding on election management cooperation that includes the export of customised Electronic Voting Machines, The New Indian Express reported. The agreement would mark the first significant international deployment of India's EVM technology to another major democracy.
India's EVMs, developed and refined by the Election Commission of India over several decades, have long been a point of national pride even as they periodically face domestic controversy. Exporting customised versions to Indonesia — a democracy of over 270 million voters — would serve as a powerful endorsement of their reliability and security credentials on the global stage.
The MoU covers poll management more broadly, suggesting the two countries will also share expertise in voter registration, election logistics, and electoral administration. Indonesia, which holds one of the world's largest single-day elections, has been exploring technology-driven solutions to manage the complexity and scale of its voting process.
For India, the deal is significant beyond the electoral technology domain. It positions the country as an exporter of governance technology to Southeast Asia, deepening bilateral ties with a key Indo-Pacific partner. The agreement is expected to be formalised during high-level diplomatic engagement between the two nations.
