Indian space startup Agnikul Cosmos has entered a partnership with Finland's ICEYE to develop synthetic aperture radar satellite and launch capability within India, the companies announced. The collaboration pairs Agnikul's homegrown small-satellite launch vehicle programme with ICEYE's established expertise in SAR satellite technology — a combination that could give India a commercially operated, end-to-end earth observation capability.
SAR satellites are particularly valuable because they can capture high-resolution imagery regardless of weather conditions or time of day, unlike optical satellites that depend on clear skies and sunlight. This makes them critical tools for defence surveillance, flood and cyclone response, crop monitoring, and border management — all areas of acute national importance for India.
Agnikul made history as one of India's first private rocket companies to attempt orbital launches, developing the Agnibaan launch vehicle with a novel semi-cryogenic engine. Partnering with a global SAR leader like ICEYE — which operates one of the world's largest commercial SAR constellations — signals a maturing of India's private space sector, moving beyond launch services toward full mission capability.
The deal also reflects the broader internationalisation of India's post-ISRO-reform space ecosystem, with Indian startups now forging technology partnerships with European space firms.
