The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India has unveiled the TRL Compass Platform, a digital tool intended to standardise how technology readiness is assessed and tracked across the country's research and innovation ecosystem. The launch, announced by PIB, also saw the PSA office sign a formal MoU with the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), embedding data security principles at the heart of the new platform.
Technology Readiness Levels are an internationally recognised scale — originally developed by NASA — used to measure the maturity of a technology from basic research through to full deployment. India has long sought to accelerate the journey from academic research to commercial product, and the TRL Compass Platform is positioned as a key instrument for that transition. By providing a common framework, it aims to help funding agencies, government departments and private investors make more informed decisions about where to direct resources.
The partnership with DSCI adds a layer of credibility and caution. As India's premier industry body on data protection and cybersecurity, DSCI's involvement suggests the platform will handle sensitive research and innovation data with robust security standards — an important consideration as more proprietary technology information moves onto government-managed digital infrastructure.
The move reflects the PSA office's broader push to make Indian science and technology policy more evidence-based and systematically managed. If widely adopted, the TRL Compass could become a standard reference point for how ministries, research institutions and the private sector evaluate and fund emerging technologies in India.
