Pune Court Sentences 65-Year-Old to Death for Rape and Murder of 3-Year-Old Girl, Calls it 'Rarest of Rare'

A Pune court has awarded the death penalty to a 65-year-old man convicted of raping and murdering a 3-year-old girl, declaring the case to fall in the 'rarest of rare' category that justifies capital punishment under Indian law. The 'rarest of rare' doctrine, established by the Supreme Court of India, requires courts to demonstrate that no alternative punishment would suffice before imposing death.
