Key facts

  • TRL Compass Platform launched by Office of Principal Scientific Adviser
  • MoU signed between PSA's office and Data Security Council of India (DSCI)
  • Platform tracks Technology Readiness Levels of Indian innovations

The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India launched the TRL Compass Platform in a move aimed at systematically tracking how close Indian innovations are to real-world deployment. Simultaneously, the PSA's office signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), formalising collaboration between the country's top scientific advisory body and its leading data security industry group.

TRL — or Technology Readiness Level — is an internationally recognised framework used to assess how mature a technology is, from basic research all the way to fully deployed product. The TRL Compass Platform is intended to give policymakers, investors, and researchers a structured view of where Indian innovations sit on this spectrum, helping direct funding and support to technologies that are close to commercialisation.

The MoU with DSCI adds a data security dimension to this effort, recognising that as Indian deep-tech scales up, robust data governance and cybersecurity practices must be embedded from early stages. DSCI, which works closely with both government and industry on data protection standards, is well-positioned to support startups navigating India's evolving regulatory landscape.

The launch reflects the government's broader ambition to bridge the gap between India's strong research base and its relatively lower rate of technology commercialisation. By creating a transparent readiness map, TRL Compass could help align government procurement, venture funding, and academic research priorities — giving promising but underfunded innovations a clearer pathway to market.
