India's first AICTE-approved BTech in AI with focus on Indian Knowledge Systems launched

India's higher-education landscape is about to gain a first-of-its-kind degree: an AICTE-approved BTech in Artificial Intelligence that formally weaves Indian Knowledge Systems into its core curriculum, according to a report by India Today.

The programme is designed to go beyond the standard AI syllabus — machine learning, neural networks, data engineering — by grounding students in India's own intellectual traditions. Indian Knowledge Systems encompass classical mathematics, Vedic logic, Ayurvedic epistemology, and other indigenous frameworks that proponents argue can offer fresh perspectives on problem-solving, ethics, and human-centred design in AI.

The AICTE's stamp of approval is significant. As the statutory body regulating technical education across India, its endorsement means the degree carries full national recognition, making graduates eligible for government jobs, postgraduate admissions, and corporate recruitment on equal footing with conventional engineering degrees. It also gives other universities a template to replicate or adapt.

The launch comes at a moment when India is aggressively pushing AI adoption — from government schemes to startup funding — and simultaneously debating what an authentically Indian approach to technology might look like. By fusing cutting-edge AI with indigenous intellectual traditions, the programme attempts to answer that question inside a classroom, training a generation of engineers who are as conversant with ancient Indian logic systems as they are with large language models.
