  • Platform assesses Technology Readiness Levels for Indian innovations

The Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser (PSA) to the Government of India has launched the TRL Compass Platform and signed a formal partnership agreement with the Data Security Council of India (DSCI), according to an announcement from the Press Information Bureau.

The TRL Compass Platform is built around the concept of Technology Readiness Levels — a globally recognised scale used to assess how mature a technology is, from early-stage research all the way through to full deployment. By providing Indian innovators, startups, and research institutions with a structured compass to gauge where their technology stands, the platform aims to help bridge the often difficult gap between laboratory breakthroughs and real-world commercial applications.

The MoU with DSCI — India's premier industry body focused on data protection, cybersecurity, and privacy — adds a data governance dimension to the initiative. The partnership is intended to ensure that as technologies are assessed and scaled, data security and privacy standards are built in from the ground up rather than addressed as an afterthought.

The launch comes at a moment of heightened focus on both technology commercialisation and data regulation in India. The government has been pushing to accelerate deep-tech innovation through various programmes, and the PSA's office has played a central role in coordinating research and development policy.

For India's innovation ecosystem — spanning academic institutions, government labs, and startups — the TRL Compass offers a potential common language for measuring and communicating technological progress, while the DSCI partnership signals that security will be a foundational consideration in that journey.
