After Northern Wins, BJP Eyes South With Fresh Agenda for Telangana Polls

Buoyed by successive victories in northern states, the BJP has set its sights firmly on southern India, with Telangana emerging as the party's priority target in the region. New BJP national president Nitin Nabin used a three-day visit to the state to articulate the party's agenda, telling supporters and media that the BJP stood for "politics of development, not of dynasty and corruption" — a direct shot at the ruling Congress government led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.

The Hindustan Times and The Hindu both reported on Nabin's visit as a significant organisational push, with the BJP seeking to consolidate its base and broaden its appeal in a state it came close to winning before Congress's decisive 2023 comeback. The party's northern momentum — stemming from recent assembly election victories — has given its leadership fresh confidence to take on competitive southern battlegrounds.

Telangana presents a complex electoral landscape. Congress won the 2023 election on the back of strong welfare promises and anti-incumbency against the then-ruling Bharat Rashtra Samithi, but has since faced governance pressures. The BJP sees an opportunity to position itself as the credible alternative, particularly in urban constituencies and among voters disillusioned with both Congress and the BRS.

For the BJP, cracking the south remains a long-term strategic imperative. With Karnataka in Congress hands and Tamil Nadu firmly in DMK territory, Telangana represents arguably the most accessible southern prize. Nabin's visit signals the party intends to begin that campaign in earnest well ahead of the next election cycle.
