The argument centres on a fundamental engineering reality: solar and wind power are intermittent by nature, and without large-scale storage to capture surplus generation and discharge it during low-production periods, renewable capacity additions alone cannot guarantee reliable power supply.
India has set ambitious targets for renewable energy expansion, and solar installations in particular have grown rapidly. But grid operators and energy planners have increasingly flagged the storage gap as a binding constraint. On days with low wind or overcast skies, the absence of adequate storage means the grid must still fall back on coal and gas peaking plants — undermining both the economics and the emissions benefits of renewables.
Solutions under discussion and deployment include grid-scale lithium-ion battery storage, pumped hydro projects and emerging technologies such as flow batteries and green-hydrogen storage. The government has introduced production-linked incentive schemes for advanced battery cells, and several large storage tenders have been floated, but capacity still lags behind what the scale of India's renewable buildout demands.
