India and New Zealand are pressing ahead with negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement, with The Hindu describing the prospective deal as a modern trade partnership that could reshape bilateral economic ties between the two countries.
The FTA talks, which have seen fitful progress over the years, have gained renewed urgency as India accelerates its global trade agenda. New Delhi has been keen to diversify its export markets and lock in preferential access in markets across the Asia-Pacific and beyond, particularly as the global trade environment grows more uncertain under the pressure of US tariff actions.
The agreement, if concluded, would be one of India's most significant trade pacts with a developed Pacific nation. New Zealand is a major exporter of dairy, meat, and agricultural products — sectors that India's farmers and policymakers guard carefully. Any concessions on agricultural imports will need to be balanced against domestic political sensitivities, particularly among rural constituencies.
For India, the gains are expected to come largely from services, pharmaceuticals, information technology, and textiles.
