Key facts
- BSE and NSE closed for Muharram public holiday
- Banks also shut across the country for the day
- Markets reopen on the next scheduled trading day
India's premier stock exchanges — the BSE and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) — observed a full trading holiday on account of Muharram, leaving equity, derivatives, and currency markets inactive for the day. Banks across the country also remained shut in observance of the public holiday.
Muharram is one of the officially gazetted public holidays recognised by the Reserve Bank of India and market regulators, triggering automatic closures of financial institutions and exchanges. Such closures are announced in advance by the exchanges through their annual holiday calendars, allowing market participants to plan accordingly.
For retail investors and traders, the closure means no buying, selling, or settlement of trades during the day. Pending transactions linked to Thursday's trades will move through the clearing system when markets resume. Corporates with time-sensitive payment needs via RTGS or NEFT had to plan around the banking closure as well.
The holiday falls at an active period for Indian markets, which have been navigating global volatility from Asian market turbulence and awaiting developments on the India-US trade front. Monday's opening is therefore expected to be particularly closely watched, as it will be the first opportunity for markets to respond to the weekend's global cues.
Investors are advised to check the official exchange holiday calendars for remaining market holidays in the year to avoid disruptions to their trading and investment plans.
