Japan PM Sanae Takaichi to Visit India July 1–3 for Annual Summit

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi will travel to India from July 1 to 3 for the annual India-Japan bilateral summit, New Delhi confirmed on Thursday. The visit will be Takaichi's first engagement with Indian leadership at the summit level since she assumed office as Japan's Prime Minister.

The India-Japan annual summit is one of the most institutionalised bilateral mechanisms in India's foreign policy architecture, encompassing discussions on defence cooperation, infrastructure investment, technology, and strategic alignment in the Indo-Pacific. Japan is the financier of India's Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail project and a key defence and semiconductor partner.

The summit is expected to take stock of ongoing cooperation and potentially announce new initiatives across several sectors. With both countries closely aligned on Indo-Pacific strategy and sharing concerns about China's assertiveness, the strategic dimensions of the meeting are likely to be prominent.

Takaichi's visit comes at a time when India is actively deepening ties with like-minded democracies. The three-day schedule suggests a substantive agenda beyond the formal summit session, likely including business roundtables and other bilateral meetings.
