India lifts commercial LPG supply restrictions as US-Iran deal hopes ease energy fears

India has withdrawn restrictions on commercial LPG supply, Hindustan Times reported Wednesday evening, in a development tied to improving prospects for a US-Iran diplomatic agreement that could unlock additional energy supply for global markets.

The restrictions, which had constrained commercial LPG availability, were put in place against a backdrop of Middle East tensions and uncertainty over Iranian energy exports under American sanctions. With negotiations between Washington and Tehran showing signs of progress, Indian energy authorities appear to have judged that the supply risk has diminished sufficiently to ease the curbs.

Iran is one of the world's largest holders of natural gas reserves, and a deal that relieves sanctions pressure could eventually add significant volumes to global LPG and crude markets. India, which imports the vast majority of its energy needs, stands to benefit from both increased supply and lower prices if Iranian barrels return to the market in greater volume.

For the commercial sector — hotels, restaurants, caterers and small manufacturers that rely on LPG rather than domestic cooking cylinders — the withdrawal of supply restrictions offers near-term relief.
