Sriram Raghavan's Agent Vinod, released in 2012 with Saif Ali Khan in the lead, has long occupied an awkward place in Hindi cinema's memory: too slick to dismiss, too sprawling to entirely defend. The Indian Express revisits the film and makes a case for it being Raghavan's most revealing work precisely because of how it fails.
Raghavan is a filmmaker with a cult following built on meticulous noir plotting — his Ek Hasina Thi, Johnny Gaddaar and eventually the blockbuster Andhadhun all demonstrate a director who thinks deeply about genre mechanics. Agent Vinod was his most expensive and ambitious project up to that point, a pan-continental spy thriller that attempted to do James Bond on a Bollywood budget, with stops across Russia, Morocco and Afghanistan.
Where it struggled was in reconciling Raghavan's instinct for tight, character-driven suspense with the demands of a big-budget commercial entertainer that needed item numbers, comedy tracks and a romance arc. The seams showed. Commercially, the film underperformed against its considerable budget and was considered a setback for both Khan and the director.
