John Jumper, the Nobel Prize-winning scientist celebrated for leading the AlphaFold protein-structure prediction project, has departed Google DeepMind to join Anthropic, in one of the most high-profile researcher moves the AI industry has seen in recent years.
Jumper shared the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis for AlphaFold2, a system that solved a 50-year-old grand challenge in biology by accurately predicting the three-dimensional structures of virtually all known proteins. The work has already transformed drug discovery, with researchers worldwide using the freely available AlphaFold database to accelerate the development of new medicines and treatments.
His decision to leave DeepMind for Anthropic is striking both symbolically and strategically.
